Countries without reserve currency status fear that their fates are tied to macroeconomic and political decisions that are outside of their control. The push for a world market dominated less by the dollar is nothing new, but just as investors seek to hold a basket of investments rather than a solitary stock, so do central banks when it comes to managing their reserves. The euro is the second most used reserve currency, accounting for roughly 20 percent of global foreign exchange reserves. The European Union rivals the United States in economic size, exports more, and boasts a strong central bank and robust financial markets—factors that make its currency a viable challenger to the dollar.

Is a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve “Highly Improbable”?

Central banks often hold currency in the form of government bonds, such as U.S. treasuries. The U.S. treasury market remains by far the world’s largest and most liquid—the easiest to buy into and sell out of—bond market. This was known as “going off the gold standard” and sometimes caused hyperinflation as the supply of paper money and bank deposits, relieved of the limit of gold redemption, greatly expanded. Foreign exchange reserves can include banknotes, deposits, bonds, treasury bills, and other government securities. These assets serve many purposes but are most significantly held to ensure that a central government agency has backup funds if their national currency rapidly devalues or becomes entirely insolvent.

It was during this time that the global economy became increasingly more integrated and countries began to establish central banks and treasuries. The popularity of reserve currencies is a function of their stability and reputation. For example, the Chinese yuan hasn’t taken off as a major reserve currency due to concerns over a sudden devaluation that could send their value lower. The same is true for the euro following the sovereign debt crisis in 2009 and the immigration crisis in 2016 and 2017. These issues have led to concerns over currency volatility, which has kept the U.S. dollar as the most popular reserve currency through the early twenty-first century. Countries don’t fill out an application to have their currencies become reserve currencies, and there is no international organization that confers this status.

Delegates from 44 Allied countries met in Bretton Wood, New Hampshire, in 1944 to develop a system to manage foreign exchange that would not disadvantage any country. The delegation decided that the world’s currencies would no longer be linked to gold but pegged to the U.S. dollar. Nations across the world bulk up on reserve currency as a shock absorber against economic crisis. China has the largest reserves at $3,520.4 trillion followed by Japan at $1.321 trillion.

What Does Alcohol Do to Your Body?

Scar tissue impairs the liver’s ability to create proteins, filter the blood, and other bodily functions. People who drink regularly may notice that alcohol does not have the same effect on them as it used to. You build up a tolerance over time and do not feel as good as you once did with the same amount of alcohol. Even low levels of alcohol consumption can harm your health, and high levels have even worse effects. The predominant in vivo proton signal is NAA, with contributions from other N-acetyl compounds, especially N-acetyl aspartyl glutamate.

Alcohol can disrupt fetal development at any stage during a pregnancy—including at the earliest stages and before a woman knows she is pregnant. “Generally, over time, there have been new studies that show that chronic alcohol use — at very heavy use — can lead to brain damage, both gray and white matter. It can cause brain atrophy and shrink your brain over time,” shares Dr. Anand. As researchers continue to investigate the links between gut health and mental health, we are learning that ultra-processed foods may be linked to compromised mental health, including increased instances of depression and disordered eating.

Ethanol is classified as a “depressant” because it has a generally slowing effect on brain activity through activation of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) pathways. Depending on who you ask, you might be told to drink a few glasses of red wine a day or to avoid alcohol altogether. The reasons for such recommendations are many, but, by and large, they tend to stem from a study someone read about or saw reported in the news. Alcohol can negatively affect your brain by impairing your memory, judgment, and decision making.

Recent work has focused on how differences in genetics and intracellular signaling impact ethanol’s actions on microcircuits and the relationship between these effects and alcohol intoxication, reward, and drinking. It is well known that C57Bl6J mice differ from DBA mice in ethanol-related behaviors (Belknap et al., 1993), likely due to differences in genes governing the neural mechanisms underlying reward and aversion (Cunningham et al., 1992). A top-down examination of ethanol’s effects on GABAA-receptor-mediated transmission in cerebellar microcircuitry revealed differences between these strains that may account for the behavioral differences. Rossi and colleagues observed a differential balance between the GABA-potentiating and inhibiting effects of ethanol in C57Bl6J and DBA mouse strains (Kaplan et al., 2013) that correlate with differences in ethanol intake. More recent studies indicate that enhancing GABAergic transmission in the cerebellum of C57Bl6J mice decreases ethanol drinking to levels seen in DBA mice (Kaplan et al., 2016). The acute and chronic effects of ethanol on microcircuits can help reveal changes in local control of synapses that alter the output of key brain regions.

How Does Alcohol Affect Your Brain?

Perhaps this is because the number of female hazardous drinkers was notably lower than among male subjects and, therefore, the number of subjects with sleep disorder caused by alcohol might have been too low to yield any statistically significant result. However, persons who consume alcohol in excessive amounts suffer from poor sleep quality and patients with alcohol use disorders commonly report insomnia. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effects of alcohol use on sleep quality. Risks for the baby can include brain damage and developmental, cognitive, and behavioral issues.

If untreated, WE patients can develop KS, a severe neurological disorder characterized by anterograde amnesia (Harper 2006; Zahr et al. 2011). Malnutrition, vomiting, and diarrhea are common in chronic alcoholism and can contribute to thiamine deficiency (Fields et al. 1994; Gloria et al. 1997; Morgan 1982; Ross et al. 2012). Classical clinical signs of WE included visual, gait, and mental disturbances (Victor et al. 1971), but more recent assessments describe mild, moderate, and severe signs and symptoms including anorexia, loss of memory, and emotional changes (Thomson et al. 2008). An MRI image of acute WE (see figure 2) has symmetrical bright spots, or hyperintensities, clearly visible on T2-weighted images, and those created by fluid attenuation inversion recovery2 (FLAIR).

When techniques are combined, it will be possible to identify the pattern, timing, and distribution of the brain regions and behaviors most affected by alcohol use and abuse. Electromagnetic methods (ERP and MEG) specify the timing of alcohol-induced abnormalities, but the underlying neural substrate (i.e., the anatomical distribution of the participating brain areas) cannot be unequivocally evaluated based on these methods alone. Conversely, the hemodynamic methods (fMRI, PET, and SPECT) have good spatial resolution but offer little information about the sequence of events.

Mental health conditions that alcohol can worsen

Alcohol withdrawal syndrome occurs when someone who has been drinking excessive amounts of alcohol for an extended period of time suddenly stops drinking or reduces their intake. This is no more than seven drinks per week for females and no more than 14 per week for males. Heavy drinking slows the cerebral cortex, which takes in and processes new information in your brain. Alcohol also dulls sensory uptake, so it might be difficult to take in new information.

MRS Findings in Animal Models of Syndromes Associated With Alcoholism

Yet, despite the fact that emotional functioning can be similar in some alcoholics and people with right hemisphere damage, research provides only equivocal support for the hypothesis that alcoholism affects the functioning of the right hemisphere more than the left (Oscar-Berman and Schendan 2000). Impairments in emotional functioning that affect alcoholics may reflect abnormalities in other brain regions which also influence emotional processing, such as the limbic system and the frontal lobes. Neurons that fire spontaneously set a rhythm of tonic activity in many brain areas. Ethanol alters activity of distinct types of these “tonically active” neurons.

Indirect ethanol targets include ion channel subunits, intracellular signaling proteins, growth factors, transcription factors, proteins involved in epigenetic regulation of gene expression, and even membrane lipids. In most cases, there is no clear evidence of an ethanol-binding site or that acute ethanol alters the expression or function of these molecules, but they show prominent alterations following chronic ethanol exposure and intake. Examples of indirect targets are highlighted in this and later sections of the review.

Structural MRI

The major excitatory neurotransmitter in the human brain is the amino acid glutamate. During alcohol withdrawal, glutamate receptors that have adapted to the long-term presence of alcohol may become overactive, and this overactivity has been repeatedly linked to neuronal death, which is manifested by conditions such as stroke and seizures. Deficiencies of thiamine caused by malnutrition may contribute to this potentially destructive overactivity (Crews 2000). A single in vivo ethanol administration impairs LTP in VTA dopamine neurons in DBA mice, with no effect Dialectical Behavior Therapy Techniques for Addiction in C57 mice (Wanat et al., 2009), but unlike other regions, chronic ethanol treatment enhances NMDA-dependent LTD in VTA dopamine neurons (Bernier et al., 2011) (Figure 3Q). Ethanol exposure also inhibits LTP in VTA neuron GABAergic synapses (Guan and Ye, 2010) (Figure 3R). Further study is required to understand the effect of ethanol on midbrain dopamine neurons, especially in light of recent findings on the anatomical and biochemical diversity of dopamine neurons (Lammel et al., 2008; Poulin et al., 2014).

Business owners, freelancers and entrepreneurs often spend a large chunk of time on administration and accounting. Suited for small- and medium-sized businesses (SMBs), Xero is an affordable cloud-based accounting software system that streamlines these processes with plans starting at $13 per month. The number of users is also technically unlimited, but FreshBooks does charge an extra fee of $11 per user per month. Xero’s simple invoicing tool (Figure A) makes it easy to upload remote accounting jobs your logo and choose from several branding themes, but I’d love to see more extensive customization options.

This can be helpful if your company is growing fast, or you simply want the reassurance that there’s no limit to how many people can be part of the team. Xero includes extensive features that make it suitable to handle complex accounting processes for small- and medium-sized businesses as well as larger ones. The software makes it easy to pay bills, claim expenses, accept payments, track projects, manage contracts, store files and more. However, Wave’s features are more limited than many competitors in order to keep the price low, so it may not suffice for growing businesses.

Project and time tracking

Plans are affordable, starting at $13 per month, but no free plan. Limits for Xero Projects and Xero Expenses are per active user, per month.

Wave is a solid choice for small businesses looking for free accounting software. As the industry standard, QuickBooks Online is ideal if you have a growing business with specific accounting needs — as long as you don’t mind taking the time to learn the program’s ins and outs. After a 30-day trial period, Xero will bill a monthly charge of $13 per month for the Early plan, $37 per month for the Growing plan and $70 per month for the Established plan. For free invoicing platforms, consider Zoho Invoice, Square Invoices or PayPal Invoicing, although these platforms provide fewer capabilities. Xero, on the other hand, lets you customize your invoices with your own logo and text.

Pricing: Xero vs. Sage

Zoho, for example, is accounting software with a free invoice platform that allows you to bill in multiple currencies. Xero and Sage’s main selling point is their intuitive invoicing systems. Sage lets you create invoices directly from quotes and estimates, send them to customers and automatically track outstanding invoices to see what you’re owed. It also partners with Stripe so you can take card payments with ease.
